There are many paths that can be taken to motivate the minority youth in the region to pursue education and self-improvement. Some of those paths are traditional, while some are innovative. The West Penn Minority Junior Golf Association, Inc. (WPMJGA), a 501(c)(3) junior golf organization with a focus on using the game of golf as an instrument to educate our youth, is one of the most unique and valuable recreational resources for the youth in our region.

We offer top quality comprehensive instruction in all aspects of golf from the basic techniques to course management and tournament competition -- but our program extends beyond fairways and greens. WPMJGA sees the game of golf as a venue for encouragement, enlightenment, and enrichment of our youth; and one that can teach many personal and social skills that enable youth to succeed in their lives. With an emphasis on the importance of going to college and a requirement to maintain at least a C average to remain in the program, 98% percent of our participants graduate from high school, and 100% of those graduates have gone on to either college or the military. As a result of being associated with WPMJGA, students have received additional financial support from other agencies such as NEED, Poise Foundation, Ronald McDonald via the LPGA and the National Minority Golf Scholarship Association as well.

The National Federation of State High School Associations concluded in their survey “High School and Beyond” that “participation in extracurricular activities – even those not obviously associated with academic achievement – lead to increased commitment to school and school values, which leads to increased academic success.” Another study concluded, “golf is an attractive vehicle for teaching life skills, because the culture of the game already emphasizes respect, self-discipline, courtesy and cooperation.”

WPMJGA will be holding several fundraising events in 2006 in order to raise operating and programmatic funds. The event is geared to acknowledge and honor our stars in an Academy Award type setting. This event will take place on August 26, 2006 at the Oakmont Country Club, which has hosted many PGA and USGA events. The event is designed to promote the positive affects of our program and provide the necessary financial assistance to enable us to offer opportunities in golf for participating youth.
